After 12 years riding a lightweight recumbent with top components, I wanted a more "normal looking" bike for fitness riding and occasional charity rides. I wanted the lightweight and extra comfort of a carbon frame, and wanted to see how the "flat bar hybrid" bikes felt on my hands and back. The Sirrus Elite Carbon Disc fit all the wish list items. It is exactly 24 pounds (large frame) with computer (31g) and a folding bicycle stand (40g). The 700x30 tires are a good road tire that won't sink if I need to travel on dirt trails. The shifts are accurate and smooth. I'm not maxed out on gears at 20mpg which is as fast as I can maintain on the flats, and there are plenty of hill grinders too. The compact front chainring streams all nine rear sprockets, although I think I'm only using the big chainring and about five gears from start to screaming on the flats. Standing definitely feels quite different from a road bike-brake hoods position. I'm 5'10-5'11 with a 31" inseam and the large frame feels just a little tighter when standing. Seated, the "fitness geometry" position balances weight fairly evenly between the saddle and the bars. The wide bar and bar ends offer quite a few hand positions, with weight on the forefinger-thumb circle, palms, finger pads, or ball of the thumb. The trail of the fork is a good compromise between agile turns and stable straight riding. The bike is very responsive to avoidance maneuvers but not skittish at all. The hydraulic disc brakes are really controllable, and quiet. (Make sure to seat the hubs fully in the drops and the discs will be centered in the calipers with no rubbing.) Discs weigh more than rim brakes, but have many advantages to offer. I wanted hydraulics, and the Sirrus Elite Carbon Disc fits the wish. The ride is comfortable, but not sluggish in any way. When you stomp the pedals, the bike really responds, and is very well behaved when standing. The frame has really clean lines, with no ugly welds or sharp edges. It exudes a quality feeling while keeping the price reasonable.
